Mysticism
People in today’s society tend to view mysticism as one of those beliefs that will never have any place in the real world. However, both worldly and religious figures would beg to differ. They believe that mysticism plays a very important part in how people believe and act in their day to day interaction with life. Mysticism is the belief in the existence of realities that are beyond a person’s perceptual or intellectual apprehension. This means that the belief is firmly rooted in the fact that there is a higher power that shines down upon the world, be it the Christian god, the Arabic Allah, or the Tibetan Buddha or any other kind of religious figure.

In Catholicism, mysticism is believed and practiced. Mysticism in the Catholic religion is believed to help create a more direct union of the human soul with the Holy Trinity. There are many Catholic mystics that wrote teachings. Mystics include Saint Catherine of Sienna who was an advisor to the Pope, and Saint Benedict who published The Rule of St. Benedict in 1949. These teachings are meant to help a person bring themselves closer to the Divinity. Another mystic was Saint Ignatius of Loyola wrote The Spiritual Exercises in order to help people bring themselves closer to God. These teachings help people to understand that not only will going to church and confession help them in their walk, but mysticism will help them have a greater understanding and closeness with the God in which they have placed their belief.
Jewish people also believe in mysticism. The teachings of Kabbalah are believed to be a secret doctrine of an esoteric interpretation of the Torah. Another way of looking at Kabbalah is that it is a teaching of light, not religion. There are Kabbalah schools that offer teachings to answer the ultimate questions of life:
- Who am I?
- Why am I here?
- Where did life come from?
These three questions seem do dominate the mind, cause people to stress over the answers, and sometimes they tend to make people very upset at the lack of answers. So if a person is questioning themselves and their existence, then studying Kabbalah will help them find the answers they seek.
Mysticism is not just for the people who lack faith and it is not just for the fanatically zealous people who are seen on television. Whether a person is simply looking for something or someone to believe in or they simply need a way to grow closer to the higher power that they believe in, mysticism can help either way. Mysticism can turn a person from believing in nothing, or nearly nothing, to a person who has a positive outlook on life and what possibilities for them there are in the world. Not only will a person believing and practicing mysticism be happy and radiant, that happiness and radiance will be passed on to those who they come into contact with in their day to day dealings with life.
