What is a psychic
Most everyone has heard the term “psychic”, but may not know exactly what a psychic is. A psychic is a person that can see and know things most of us cannot. Sometimes called a medium or spiritualist, they can sense things other people can’t by means other than the five senses we all possess: smell, touch, hearing, sight, and taste. A psychic may have abilities such as clairvoyance (the ability to “see” distant people, objects or events), psychometry (the ability to be exposed to an object or area and know its past), and precognition (the ability to know about events before they occur). They often do readings for an individual to help give guidance with decisions, tell them what will happen in the future, or help them come in contact with a loved one who has passed on.
Some people believe we are all born with psychic abilities and that children often see things adults do not. As children, we often have our creativity and ideas muffled by adults and over time, our psychic abilities get pushed to the side based on societal pressures to “be normal.” Many believe that the mind’s powers are measureless and we only use a small portion of what we have. Consequently, if we work on it, we can bring our psychic ability to the forefront again.
You have probably seen psychics on television. Patricia Arquette is a hit NBC show called Medium. In it, she portrays the real life events of psychic Allison DuBois. Allison works closely with law enforcement and families on unsolved murders and missing person cases. Another psychic often seen on television is Sylvia Browne. She appears weekly on the Montel Williams Show to give advice to audience members who have questions about their life. Nine of the over thirty books she has written have been on the New York Times bestseller list. John Edwards is another well-known psychic. In addition to being a best selling author, he had a show on the WE channel titled Cross Country. John also had a successful television show from 1999 to 2004 called Crossing Over.
One of the most famous portrayals of a psychic in a movie was in Ghost. Whoopi Goldberg played Oda Mae Brown, a psychic contacted by Patrick Swayze’s ghost. At first, she believes her abilities to speak to the dead are not real, but after coming into contact with Swayze, she realizes that she has the same gift her mother and grandmother had.
