Reiki

reiki photo Another treatment for physical and emotional well being is Reiki. This Japanese technique, developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui, involves a procedure of laying hands on a patient. Those that practice reiki act as channels for Reiki energy. This energy flows from their palms to the parts of the patient’s body that needs healing. The word reiki actually comes from two Japanese words – rei, meaning higher spirit and ki, a life energy force. Many cultures believe that when your energy level is too low, you become more susceptible to illness.

It is often taught that reiki practitioners get their energy through the 7th chakra – the crown. This chakra is closely tied to spirituality. The energy then goes to the 4th chakra and flows from the practitioners hands to the patient. Some believe that reiki energy is intelligent, that once it enters the body, it knows what parts need healing and travels to them. However, the recipient has to be willing to accept the energy or it is not absorbed. There are reiki spirit guides that watch over the practitioners and help them.

What happens during a reiki session? The practitioner asks you to lie down on a table and relax. He or she then channels the reiki energy and moves their hands on or close to parts of the body that are in need of the energy. While it is not painful, you may feel a sensation of heat, tingling, or cold in the area to which the energy is applied. This feeling may be caused by energy deficiencies in the body that are being repaired. The practitioner may also be pulling out negative energy and getting rid of a blockage that stored stale energy.

You can learn Usui’s reiki method through a correspondence course on the Internet. There are three courses you must complete: the first degree, the second degree and the masters course. The first degree teaches basics of how to work with the energy. You also learn the different hand positions for transferring the energy. The second degree goes deeper into the healing. Those that complete the second degree learn how to help people who have deep seeded emotional problems such as addictions, fears, and depression. In the third and final course, sometimes referred to as the third degree, the student becomes a master reiki practitioner. Once they pass this course, they can teach reiki themselves.

Reiki is viewed as alternative medicine and therefore, there will always have people who are critical of its usefulness. However, there have been studies that have show positive results from reiki therapy. If you are suffering from an emotional problem such as stress and anxiety or a physical problem such as a backache, give reiki a chance.
