Meditation

meditation photo Meditation involves the focusing of the mind. While it is not religion specific, many Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism consider meditation a part of their practice. Any type of prayer may be seen as meditation as it involves a quiet reflection. Meditation can bring about not only spiritual awareness, but also can help the overall physical well-being of a person.

Meditation is often seen as a mental exercise as it is often defined as a state where the mind is free of all thoughts. Because the mind is free of its own thoughts, it is believe that the divine spirit can then enter and provide guidance. In some meditation, subjects focus on one specific thing such as a statue or their own breathing. Some meditation merely focuses on the subject themselves and their physical well-being. Many prefer to meditate when doing yoga.

When used as part of a religion, there are different physical postures associated with meditation. The Dalai Lama, the leader of Tibetan Buddhism, suggests seven positions when meditating. These positions are legs crossed in the Lotus Position, eyes open and at a medium level, a straight back, shoulders are even and relaxed, mouth slightly open, and the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. Most practitioners of meditation feel the spine should be kept straight regardless of their religious affiliation. This is because a straight spine helps promote circulation. Controlled breathing is often a very important part of meditation. Slow, concentrated breathes help the subject reach a more relaxed state when meditating.

How long should you meditate? It is entirely up to you. Some monks and nuns spend entire days meditating, but even the smallest amount can be beneficial. The typical amount of time spent meditating is twenty or thirty minutes, but if you find yourself relaxed and enjoying it, meditate for as long as you like.

How often should you meditate? Again, this is personal preference although some feel you should set some type of regular schedule to meditate to keep in tune with your spiritual or physical self.

What will meditation do for you? Emotionally, it can bring you closer to your divine spirit. It can relieve stress and in doing so, lead the better cardiovascular health for those that practice it. Many people believe that meditation helps them to become more compassionate by reflecting on certain events or their own actions. It is also believed that through meditation, you can recover buried memories such as of past lives.

The important thing to remember if you decide to meditate is to find a quiet place where you can be alone. Remember the control your breathing and either try to clear your mind completely or focus on one thing. After just a few minutes, you will no doubt feel much more relaxed.
