chakras photo Chakras are the centers of both metaphysical and biophysical energy found in the body. The word chakra itself is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel or disk. There are seven of these centers in the human body, each correlating with a major nerve ganglia coming from the spinal column. The Hindu belief in chakras goes back to ancient times. As early as 600 AD, the book Yoga Unanishads mentions the psychic centers located in the body.

Each chakra is associated with a color, a physiological function, and other characteristics. All chakras are not open fully and this makes certain chakras work extra hard. There are methods for opening your chakras. Most involve a meditative state with physical positions and chants. For example, to open the root chakra, bring together your thumb and index finger at the tips, concentrate on the root region, and chant LAM.
