Chakras
Chakras are the centers of both metaphysical and biophysical energy found in the body. The word chakra itself is a Sanskrit word meaning
wheel or disk. There are seven of these centers in the human body, each correlating with a major nerve ganglia coming from the spinal column.
The Hindu belief in chakras goes back to ancient times. As early as 600 AD, the book Yoga Unanishads mentions the psychic centers located in the body.

Each chakra is associated with a color, a physiological function, and other characteristics. All chakras are not open fully and this makes certain chakras work extra hard. The ideal environment is one where all chakras are open, working together in balance. The seven chakras of the body, listed in order of spiritual significance, are:
- Crown (violet) – Just above the head, this chakra’s primary function is the connection to the divine, so the Crown is the highest ranking of all chakras.
An under active crown means you are not fully aware of your spirituality. An overactive crown means you over thinking things too much and ignoring physical needs.
- Third Eye (royal blue) – Near the eyebrow region, the third eye chakra deals with intuition and extra sensory perception. An under active third eye means
you are not thinking enough for yourself, but an overactive third eye means you tend to live in a fantasy world.
- Throat (ice blue) – The throat chakra deals with verbal communication and self-expression. An under active throat chakra means you do not talk enough
while an overactive throat chakra means you talk too much.
- Heart (medium green) – The heart chakra has to do with matters of the heart such as love, compassion, and healing. An under active heart chakra means you
love for selfish reasons while an overactive heart chakra means you smother people with love.
- Naval (light yellow) – The naval chakra deals with career, power, and control. An under active naval chakra means you tend to be aggressive while an
overactive naval chakra means you tend to be passive.
- Sacral (light orange) - The sacral chakra, located at the tailbone, deals with emotion, creativity, and sexual energy. An under active sacral chakra means
you are not open to people with your emotions while an overactive sacral chakra means you are too emotional.
- Root (light red) – This chakra has to do with instinct, security, and survival. An under active root chakra means you are nervous while an overactive root chakra means materialistic.
There are methods for opening your chakras. Most involve a meditative state with physical positions and chants. For example, to open the root chakra, bring together your thumb and index finger at the tips, concentrate on the root region, and chant LAM.
