ESP
ESP stands for extra sensory perception. It is used to describe someone who knows things using something other than our five innate senses of sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing. For years, many cultures have believed in ESP and the powers of feeling held by certain people. In women, it is often referred to as a “woman’s intuition.” It is the ability to just know something is going to happen. Psychics are said to have extra sensory perception and this is how they can identify things about people during a reading.

The most popular way to test someone for ESP is with the use of Zener Cards. Parapsychologist J.B. Rhine created Zener cards, calling them Zener cards in honor of his associate Karl Zener. The cards were first invented in the early part of the 20th century. There are 25 cards in a pack, five cards each of five distinct designs. The designs are a circle, a plus sign, an outline of a 5-pointed star, a square, and three wavy, vertical lines. There are two tests that can be done with the Zener cards – the telepathy test and the clairvoyance test. The telepathy test consists of a sender, who looks at one of the cards and telepathically sends the symbol to the receiver. The clairvoyance test involves a tester and a participant, with the participant trying to identify the symbol on a card with the card turned face down. Often, a third party oversees and records the experiment to make sure it is impartial and the participant could not see the symbols on the cards in any way. Sometimes a partition is placed between the tester and participant to ensure the integrity of the testing.
Each guess is recorded and after the experiment is complete, the results are analyzed. It is believed that the higher your results are, the stronger your psychic abilities are. Of course, you have to take into consideration the factor of chance – that everyone will be able to get so many answers correct just by guessing. Since there are 25 cards total, five of each five symbols, someone guessing is expected to score about 20% accuracy. It is important that the participant be tested several times to get a more accurate reading of their score average. When an overall average consistently is over 20%, that person is believed to have at least a small amount of ESP.
