Regis Philbin

Regis Philbin, talk show host, game show host, and all purpose TV personality, was born on August 25, 1931 in New York, New York. He was raised in the South Bronx, and is one of the most famous graduates of Notre Dame University, graduating in 1953. Following graduation he served a stint with the U. S Navy.

His first talk show, the Regis Philbin Show was on KGTV in San Diego, California. He gained national exposure as Joey Bishop's sidekick on the Joey Bishop Show. Philbin joined Cindy Garvey on the Morning Show on WABC in New York in 1983. The show became a hit after Garvey was replaced by Kathie Lee (Johnson) Gifford in 1985. The show, Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, became nationally syndicated three years later. After Gifford left to pursue her career in music Kelly Ripa joined Regis, and the show was then named Life with Regis and Kelly.

Philbin was also the host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and set off a fashion trend when he wore dark shirts and ties in the same color. He set a Guinness World Record on his August 20, 2004 show which gave him a total of 15,188 hours on TV. The previous record holder for most hours on camera was Hugh Downs.

He has been married twice, and has 4 children. His wife, the former Joy Senese often guest hosts on his TV show. In 1995, he wrote his memoirs," I'm Only One Man." He also has a solo nightclub act.

Following a coronary heart disease scare triggered by high cholesterol, Philbin has taken on a role as spokesman for the American Heart Association.
