Bob Barker
Bob Barker, was born Robert William Barker on December 12, 1923, in Darrington Washington. He was raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota where his mother taught school. They later moved to Springfield, Missouri where he graduated from high school and attended Drury College on a basketball scholarship. His college career was interrupted when he enlisted in the U. S Navy during World War II where he became a fighter pilot. After his military service he returned to Drury College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in economics. Bob Barker married Dorothy Jo Gideon whom he met at an Ella Fitzgerald concert in 1939. They remained married until her death from lung cancer in 1981. In 1956 Barker took over the hosting job of the tv show Truth or Consequences. He was the host of that program for 18 years. Then, in 1972 he became the hose of The Price is Right, and to this day he remains at the helm. Outspoken in his support of animal rights, he always closes his show with the phrase, "Control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered." As a matter of fact, CBS does not offer prizes on the show that violate his animal rights views.
In 2002, Barker received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the daytime Emmy Awards, and in 2004 he was inducted into the Academy of TV Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. He was twice named in the Guinness Book of Word Records as TV Most Durable Performer. To celebrate his 80th birthday in 2003, CBS honored him with a prime time special featuring among others, Celine Dion, Larry King and Barker's karate instructor, actor Chuck Norris. Bob Barker is also a vegetarian, a civil war buff and holds a black belt in karate.
