Condoleeza Rice

In August 2004 Forbes Magazine named Condoleezza Rice the worlds most powerful women. One of the highest profile female politicians in United States history, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice was born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham Alabama to Rev. and Mrs. John Wesley Rice, Jr. Her father was a Presbyterian minister, and her mother a music teacher. The name Condoleezza is a variation of the Italian musical term "con dolcezza: which is a musical direction to play with sweetness. An accomplished pianist, Secretary Rice accompanied famed cellist Yo Yo Ma for Brahms Violin Sonata in D Minor at Constitution Hall in April 2002.

She received her undergraduate degree, Cum Laude, in Political Science from the University of Denver at age 19. In 1975 she received a Masters Degree from the University of Notre Dame, and in 1986 she received a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received honorary Doctorates from Morehouse College, The University of Alabama, The University of Notre Dame, Mississippi School of Law, the University of Louisville and Michigan State University. She was a tenured Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, and served as Provost from 1993 to July 1, 1999.

She worked in the administration of George H.W. Bush as Director, then Senior Director of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council and as Special Assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. During the election campaign of George W. Bush, she took a leave of absence from Stanford to work as his foreign policy advisor. During Mr. Bush's first term, she worked as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, commonly referred to as Security Advisor. On January 26, 2005, she became the first African-American and second woman Secretary of State, succeeding Colin Powell.

In addition to English, she also speaks French , Russian and Spanish. She is one of the highest profiled women in American politics, and could be considered a front runner for the office of vice president or even president, but she has hinted that at the end of her political career she would like to be Commissioner of the NFL.
